New Adult Sunday School

The largest group in American religious life may be the disillusioned – people who have been involved in the church, respect Jesus, but question what Christianity has become. If you ever wonder about the current state of Christianity -- or your own faith -- this class is for you.

Beginning January 8th at 9:00 a.m. in Fellowship Hall, Helen Nolte will lead an eight-week class, using the book If the Church Were Christian by bestselling author Philip Gulley. Rediscovering the values of Jesus is the theme of this book. Fellow author Barbara Brown Taylor says “The chapter titles alone are worth the price of this book. Whether you pray them by yourself or discuss them with others, they chart the distance  between two very different ways of receiving God’s good news.”

Come join this class to discuss such chapter titles as “If the Church Were Christian: Jesus Would Be a Model for Living Rather Than an Object of Worship . . . Reconciliation Would Be Valued Over Judgment . . . Affirming Our Potential Would Be More Important Than Condemning Our Brokenness . . . Gracious Behavior Would Be More Important Than Right Belief . . . Peace Would Be More Important Than Power”. Christian author Diana Butler Bass sums up, “If the church were as Philip Gulley envisions here, people would be knocking down our doors to experience God’s love.”

Participants are encouraged to buy a copy of Gulley’s book in order to prepare for discussion. (However, anyone may sit in on the class and participate.) Copies of the book are $11 and are currently available. This book is an “easy read”.
