Organized for Ministry
Reno First United Methodist Church is organized differently than a traditional
Methodist Church. If you are familiar with Methodist structure, you might
remember the many many committees, each of which dealt in a very focused way
on a specific element of ministry. Reno First has eliminated all formal
committees except Finance, Board of Trustees, and Staff-Parish Relations
Committee, creating three areas of ministry along the lines of our mission
statement: outreach ministries, witness ministries, and nurturing ministries,
to carry out the functions of the traditional committees.
The functions within this ministry include our work for social and
economic justice, health and welfare ministries such as Kairos, Habitat
for Humanity, 12-step programs, and Crop Walk.
Within this ministry are such functions as new-membership, fellowship,
communications, visitation, and welcoming of new visitors.
These functions include such things as education, worship, spiritual
formation and stewardship, Sunday School, UMYF, Children's Programs,
Methodist Women, Prayer and Share, and
the music program.
Each of these three ministries is an area where anyone can participate.
Each "function" may have one or more people attending to it, but
they communicate with one another to attain common goals. Each area of
ministry needs coordination, so there are chairs and co-chairs, but the
nominating committee doesn't go about trying to get names for a certain number
of rotating memberships for each and every function. Folks "step
forward" and volunteer for something that interests them.
From time to time - three or four times a year - we have a planning
meeting, to which all church members are invited, to discuss how we'll
integrate these ministries into the coming season. This structure is an
exciting way for Reno First to focus on its missions and vision, while
involving as many people as possible.
